DEITZ, Rev. James G. passed absent peacefully at his Ohio residence on May possibly 11, 2022. He was 93.
Jim, as he was known, was a United Church of Christ (“UCC”) minister for far more than 60 many years. He was ordained in 1955 to the Christian ministry in the Evangelical and Reformed (“E and R”) Church, which became the UCC in 1957. He grew up in Philadelphia and St. Louis, graduating from Haverford School and Eden Seminary and earning his Masters in Sacred Theology from Yale Divinity College.
Jim commenced his ministry as a part-time college student minister when even now in seminary, going then to Ohio and serving five total-time pastorates there: Beaver UCC in Beavercreek, St. John UCC in Strasburg, Trinity UCC in Miamisburg, North Congregational UCC in Columbus, and Group Congregational UCC in Amherst. Jim then served section-time as Associate Minister for Pastoral Care at Avon Lake UCC, with interim pastorates at UCCs in Berlin Heights, Parma, and Oberlin, as well as Ely Presbyterian in Minnesota, eventually retiring in his eighties. Rev. Deitz embodied his ministry, bringing a light and abiding faith to his each day daily life.
Jim experienced a gift for friendship, making and keeping dear mates all his life. He served at several instances on the Board of Administrators for the United Church Board for Homeland Ministries, Heidelberg College or university, and Loved ones Promise of Lorain County as Moderator for the Ohio Convention Delegate to Common Synod Chairperson of the Ohio Pastors’ Convocation and President of the Academy of Parish Clergy, finding these chances fulfilling, and obtaining a likelihood to nurture cherished friendships as well. As recently as five decades ago, Jim and his wife, Elizabeth, could even now be identified sleeping over on couches at the church, serving to to make it probable for homeless families to get again on their feet.
Jim was a devoted partner, father, and grandfather who delighted in household everyday living. He is preceded in dying by a single beloved son, Charles his sister, Barbara and his parents, Purd and Thisbe.
A memorial company will be held in Rev. Deitz’s honor at Beaver UCC on June 19th, 2022, at 3 pm. Faure’s Requiem, which Jim requested, will be performed at 2:30 pm.
